How to Install an Electric Towel Rail Radiator

Looking for a suitable model? Browse our range of electric towel radiators here: 👉 Electric Towel Radiators

This guide explains how to install an electric towel rail radiator, including the types of electric elements, installation steps, and how heat is distributed.

🔌 Types of Electric Heating Elements

Standard Electric Elements

  • Fixed temperature heating element
  • Built-in thermostat for safety
  • Includes thermal fuse protection

Thermostatic Electric Elements

  • Monitors internal water temperature
  • Allows surface temperature control
  • Some models include timers for scheduled heating
  • Includes thermal fuse protection

🧰 What Do I Need for Installation?

You will require:

  • A 3 Amp unswitched fused connection unit
  • Positioned within 1 metre of the towel rail (cable length limitation)

📦 What’s Included in the Box?

  • Towel rail radiator
  • Electric heating element
  • Mounting brackets and fixings
  • Screws, wall plugs, and cover caps

⚠️ Important Safety Notice

Electric towel radiators and heating elements must be installed by a qualified electrician.
Always prioritise safety and comply with UK electrical regulations.

🔧 Installation Guide

Step 1

Check that the wall is strong enough to support the weight of the radiator.
Mark bracket positions and drill holes.

  • Supplied wall plugs are 8mm and suitable for solid walls only
  • Use alternative fixings for plasterboard or other wall types

Step 2

Fix the bracket bases to the wall using the supplied screws and washers.

Step 3

Attach the bracket stems loosely to the radiator using the bracket fronts and screws.

Step 4

Align the bracket stems with the wall-mounted bases and position the radiator.

Step 5

Tighten the central bracket screws securely.

Step 6

Insert and tighten the mini screws underneath the bracket bases to secure the stems.

Step 7

Fit the cover caps onto the bracket fronts.

⚡ Electrical Connection

Step 8

Insert the heating element into the bottom of the radiator.

Step 9

Cut the cable to the required length and strip approximately:

  • 40mm outer sleeve
  • 5mm insulation from each wire

Step 10

Connect the wires to a fused connection unit with a 13A fuse and secure the cord clamp.

Step 11

Fix the connection unit to the back box and tighten the screws.

🌡️ Heat Distribution in Electric Towel Rails

Electric towel radiators are filled with liquid and heated by an internal element.
Heat is distributed gradually through the rail, similar to how a kettle works, but at a controlled temperature.

  • Heat rises and spreads through diffusion
  • Middle sections will feel warmer
  • Lower bars may feel cooler as heat returns to the element
  • Top bars are slightly cooler due to expansion space (radiators are filled to approx. 90%)

This is normal operation and not a fault.

💡 Improving Heat Performance

To improve performance:

  • Bleed the radiator to remove trapped air
  • Ensure correct installation
  • Use a suitable heating element
